Grapes were first harvested on this 125-acre estate by John C. Sullenger, who purchased his sprawling, farmstead in the 1860's with a windfall courtesy of California's Gold Rush. In 1997, after years of neglect, partners in Far Niente Winery re-established the Sullenger estate (including its charming, bucolic, Queen Anne farmhouse) as a viticultural destination devoted to the production of 100 varietal, single-vineyard California wines. Located along Napa's famed Highway 29, the winery opened for visitors in 2003 and features a restored "John C. Sullenger House" as well as new buildings that house ultra-modern winemaking facilities stylistically consistent with the former estate. From this nerve center, wines of not only the John C. Sullenger Estate vineyard, but other well-situated locations that have been purchased throughout Napa and Sonoma Counties (always with an eye toward a "sense of place") are deftly crafted in a manner that maximizes site individuality.
