QUINTESSA

Augustin Huneuus purchased Quintessa in 1990 after thirty years in the wine business - first in Chile and, since 1971, in California. The 200-acre Rutherford estate benefits from diversity - be it from the multiplicity of soils and microclimates found within its five hills, its thirteen different clones of both American and European Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, or its seven different rootstocks. Depending on the vintage, Huneuus' Proprietary Blend may consist of anywhere from a nearly even split of its trio of grapes to a more Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend typical of the classed growths of the Right Bank of Bordeaux. In homage to their French counterparts and with the help of consulting winemaker Jacques Boissenot (who also consults for Margaux, Lafite-Rothschild and Léoville-las-Cases), Quintessa makes traditionally-styled wines that strike a balance between strength and sophistication.

Quintessa--Vintage 1994
Napa Valley
In original wooden case
A blend of 39 Cabernet Sauvignon, 31 Merlot, and 30 Cabernet Franc, this dark ruby/purple-colored wine possesses an elegant, graceful bouquet (sweet cherries and kirsch) that has been subtlely influenced by toasty new oak. The medium-bodied, subtle yet rich, red currant/black currant flavors unfold nicely in the mouth. This is an understated, measured, impeccably well-made, claret-styled Cabernet Sauvignon that offers beautiful richness and layers of harmonious flavors. Impressive. Drink it over the next 10-14 years. Robert parker. Wine Advocate #114 (Dec 1997)
