Lot Essay

Hugh Robert Hughes inherited a great estate in Wales on the death of his cousin, Lord Dinorben, in 1852. The value of the property in 1873 was almost £20,000 a year. Among other pictures which used to hang at the family seat of Kinmel Park is the impressive portrait of a boy by Wallerant Vaillant now in New York, Metroplitan Museum (57.104).
