Lot Essay

The pastoral medallion derives from Gaillard's 1769 engraving entitled Villageois à la pêche after François Boucher's painting La Pêche. This vignette was also copied at the Sèvres Manufactory (P. Jean-Richard, L'oeuvre grave de François Boucher, Paris, 1978, fig. 291).
An oval medallion-shaped reverse painting-on-glass after Boucher, painted in China before 1795, is illustrated in J. Gordon Lee, Philadelphians and the China Trade 1784-1844, Philadelphia, 1984, p. 91, fig. 57.
