Lot Essay

The interlaced scroll backs of these chairs are of the same inspiration as the Rufford Abbey chairs most recently sold, Christie's London, 8 July 1993, lot 87 and 14 June 2001, lot 40.
A pair of armchairs, probably from the same set as some of these chairs, was sold from the collection of Mrs E. Guy Ridpath, Christie's, London, 29 March 1939, lot 287.
Another set of a very closely related model, but with gadrooned seat apron and cabochon-carved legs, is illustrated in R.W. Symonds, English Furniture from Charles II to George II, London, 1929, p. 214.
