Lot Essay

A. Hepplewhite & Co. illustrated designs for related sofas in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, plates 22 and 23, the 'woodwork of which should be either mahogany or japanned [painted], in accordance to the chairs; the covering must also be the same'.
