The rectangular moulded cornice above a plain frieze and a pair of Gothic arched glazed doors enclosing ten adjustable shelves, flanked by conforming glazed doors each enclosing five adjustable shelves, the base section with a central frieze secretaire-drawer fitted with a green baize-lined slide and six compartments with hinged lids inlaid with ellipses, each with four letters of the alphabet (lacking J & U), above a pair of panelled doors enclosing an adjustable shelf, flanked by conforming doors enclosing an adjustable shelf, on a plinth base, one later Victorian lock

Lot Essay

The fitted secretaire-drawer, with sliding writing-surface and lettered wells, is a characteristic of the London and Lancaster firm, Gillows. An architect's desk by Gillows with one of these fitted drawers was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 10 June 1999, lot 161.
