James Shoolbred and Co. of Tottenham Court Road, became one of the first large department stores in London. They expanded from a small draper business and started to manufacture high quality furniture circa 1870, for which they were given a Royal warrant by the mid-1880s.
Two pairs of Shoolbred stools (one with maker's stamp and registration mark) were sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 15 April 1999, lot 43 and 29 November 2001, lot 276.
