Encouraged by Phil May and studying under Charles Van Havenmaet he developed his distinctive sense of humour and style of draughtsmanship. As he put it, he 'went mad on paper', drawing people as they felt rather than how they looked and rapidly became one of Punch's leading artists poking fun at social indiscretions. He revolutionised humorous art in Britain making it spontaneous, hilarious and economical and was particularly obsessed by Inland Revenue officials whom he caricatured mercilessly.
