Withoos was a pupil of Jacob van Campen and Otto Marseus van Schrieck and it was with van Schriek, and Willem van Aelst, that Withoos travelled to Italy in 1648. While in Rome he became a member of the Schildersbent and counted amongst his Italian patrons Cardinal Leopoldo de Medici. By 1653 Withoos had returned to his native Amersfoort but with the French occupation of the town in 1672 he moved to Hoorn where he remained for over thirty years.

We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD for confirming the attribution after examination of the original.
