Lot Essay

Educated in the tradition of the Hague School and living in the artistic environment of the Hague, Akkeringa developed his own style, which can be characterised by its sense of intimacy and careful paint application.
Akkeringa was born in 1861 in the Dutch Indies and moved to The Hague in 1866. From 1879 until 1885 he studied at the Art Academy of the Hague.
Despite his versatility and zealous nature, his style of painting did not change much in the course of his career. A favourite theme was the still life with flowers. He used his own colourful garden as a source of inspiration. His preferred flowers were roses, snowberries and East Indian cress. Sometimes he would use photographs of his bouquets to freshen up his memories of the sumptuous flowers when they were out of season.
