Lot Essay

A very similar painting to the present lot which was painted in 1919 is illustrated in R.S. Bakels, Willem Bastiaan Tholen, The Hague 1930, no. 60 and on the cover of the book by Knuttel. Tholen produced very few of these unfinished studies in oil as he would usually allow his brush to cover the entire canvas.
