Lot Essay

The present lot combines all of Tholen's painterly qualities. The whole composition seems to exude a luminescence which imbues the pictorial elements with life. Furthermore, the manner in which the barge on the left and the trees in the background have been cut off throw the spectator into the midst of the composition, creating a sense of intimacy.

The present lot may be compared with the painting illustrated in A. de Jong, Willem Bastiaan Tholen 1860-1931, Gouda, 1993, p. 60, fig. 70.
