Lot Essay

This piece is one of a small group of rare Kazak rugs which have this particularly archaic design. Another example, possibly the best of the group was sold in these Rooms, 29 April 1993, lot 357. In comparison, the border and field design on this lot has been slightly simplified. Please refer to that example for other examples of this group, one of which is dated possibly as early as 1833.
