Lot Essay

The 'Hatcher Cargo' which sunk about 1643 and was offered for sale at Christie's Amsterdam in 1983-84, contained over a thousand small circular boxes of this type. These porcelain boxes were originally used for ointments, medicinal pills and cosmetic patches.
