Liu Shouben studied with Ye Bengqi and his brother, Ye Xiaofeng, who founded the modern Beijing School in the 1950's and still is today one of the top studio's producing high quality inside painted snuff bottles.
The subject of boys has been a popular deocrative motif in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Traditionally, they represent the wish for abundant offspring, in particular sons, and wealth.
