Lot Essay

Accompanied by Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with sweep seconds and gold wheels in 1936 and its subsequent sale on 24 March 1936.

The ébauche for this extremely rare watch was commissioned by Patek Philippe and made by LeCoultre, fitted with the very unusual indirect centre seconds set up featuring one bridge and gold wheels as opposed to the common, superimposed system with stainless steel wheels.

Research has resulted in the identification of only 6 examples of this particular model in stainless steel to appear in public.

The present watch is a particularly fine example of a reference 96 as it combines several highly desirable features such as the stainless steel case, the three-tone silvered dial with the superb sector scheme (also called aviator dial) and the rare indirect centre seconds movement with gold wheels. It has furthermore never been offered in public before.
