With gilt-finished cylinder movement, chain fusée, finely engraved and pierced balance cock and foot, plain three arm brass balance, diamond endstone, turned pillars, à toc quarter repeating on two polished steel hammers onto the gilt dust cap, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals, outer Arabic five minute divisions, heart-shaped hands, in plain inner and outer cases, repeating through the pendant, both cases stamped with casemaker's initials VW and London datemark for 1793, dust cap signed and numbered

Lot Essay

The renowned Swiss watchmaker Josiah Emery (c. 1725-1797) moved to England and opened his own workshop at 33, Cockspur Street, Charing Cross, between 1770 and 1805.

He was one of the earliest makers to adopt Mudge's invention of the lever escapement. Emery was presented with the honorary freedom of the Clockmakers' Company on 2 April 1781. After his death he was succeeded by Louis Recordon.
