A SAMANID CARVED JADE TALISMAN
NORTH EAST IRAN, 12TH CENTURY
Of mottled dark green nephrite jade, the flat-side rectangular panel with slightly waisted sides, carved on one face with a three-line kufic inscription above a similar inverted four-line inscription, drilled through in two places to be strung, surface slightly rubbed
1¼ x 1 5/8in. (3.2 x 4cm.)

Lot Essay

The inscription comprises surat al-ikhlas (CXII) and surat al-nas (CXIV).
A similar jade talisman inscribed on one side only was sold in these Rooms, 11 April 2000, lot 293.
