Of curving tubular form, the spine finely engraved and inlaid with a series of seven roundels each depicting a planet on a ground of scrolling vine, flanked by key-pattern and scrolling vine bands, the underside with a continuous wheatsheaf design, areas of corrosion, inlay almost all remaining

Lot Essay

The figures along the spine appear to be the planets. The central figure is certainly the moon, and that above it with a sword raised over its head is Mars. The quality of work on this handle is extremely fine; considerably more elaborate than that found on most ewer handles of the period. The original ewer for which it was made must have been spectacular.
