A SAFAVID ENGRAVED BRASS COLUMNAR TORCHSTAND
IRAN, LATE 16TH CENTURY
On flaring foot with raised bands around the base and mouth, the body covered with fluted bands forming chevron designs around a central band of engraved lozenges containing interlaced arabesques, similar traingular panels above and below, the mouth with a band of very crudely written inscription cartouches, various minor meandering leafy interlace bands, lacking ring handles with original holes restored, possibly re-engraved at a later date5l

Lot Essay

The inscription, crudely written, is a verse by Ahli Torshizi which is also found on another torchstand (A. S. Melikian-Chirvani: Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World, London, 1982, cat. 148, pp. 326-7).
