Lot Essay

A miniature with the same subject and a very similar composition (although reversed) is in the San Diego Museum of Art, Collection of Edwin Binney III, 1990.374, illustrated in Schmitz, Barbara (Ed.): After the Great Mughals: Painting in Dehli and the Regional Courts in the 18th and 19th centuries, Marg 2002, Mumbai, no. 6, p.19. This present is painting is probably of the same period, from the reign of Muhammad Shah, when depicting harem scenes such as this was especially popular.
