Lot Essay

Colourful bouquets of flowers were an important and recurrent theme in Kisling's oeuvre, a subject frequently discussed by his critics. "... The paintings ... by Kisling appear to be in bloom, a symphony of live and pure colours. They bring us pleasure, life happiness, all that we really need. Kisling's art is unadorned, simplified. All in his paintings is clear, sharp, net, animated by the taste for vivid colouring, which he probably owes to his native Poland ..." (André Warnod, Le Figaro, 6 November 1951, in J. Kisling, Kisling 1891-1953, vol. III, Paris 1995, p. 67).
