Lot Essay

First in a series of fountain figures sculpted by MacMonnies in the 1890s, Pan of Rohallion was originally excecuted for the Stanford White designed estate of Howard Adams in Seabright, New Jersey. One of the artist's most successful models, it was edited by both French and American foundries in several sizes: ten, fifteen and thirty inches high. A ten-inch version, cast by Gruet Jeune, sold in these rooms, 30 March 2005, lot 79 ($14,400). Another thirty-inch version, cast by H. Rouard, sold in the same sale, lot 57 ($22,800).
