Comprising a mantel clock and a pair of ten-light candelabra: the clockcase with enamelled dial inscribed CHARPENTIER & CIE/BRONZIERS and RUE CHARLOT 8/PARIS, surmounted by a garland-bearing putto, flanked on each side by two further putti, one with a quiver, the other with a floral basket, on a shaped base, the twin-train movement stamped CHARPENTIER/FT DE BRONZES/A PARIS and 291, the candelabra modelled en suite with a winged putto with quiver supporting an urn cast with a coat-of-arms

Lot Essay

Located at 8, Rue Charlot in 1860, the firm became known as Lemerle-Charpentier from 1870-1890. At the Paris Exhibition Universelle of 1878, the bronziers Lemerle-Charpentier exhibited garnitures, vases, torchères, and an impressive example of Piat's grande horloge, examples of which were sold Sotheby's New York, November 3, 1999, lot 514, and in the same rooms on September 12, 1996, lot 453.
