Lot Essay

The present stands were designed to support a pair of vases 'Adelaïde' acquired in 1843 by Monsieur Braire. Described in the factory records as fond violet damassé and painted in the Renaissance style with portraits of illustrious 16th century knights (chevaliers), the vases are noted in the sales records for 30 December of that year as selling for 1,000 livres against a cost to the factory of 803,25 livres. The present stands follow afterwards, described as decorated to match the vases and available for 300 livres against a cost of 286,25 livres. However, no name appears in the 'sold' column - proof that they have been separated from the vases for which they were intended since December of 1843.
