According to the Sèvres archives, the present teabowl and saucer is one of two that comprised a Déjeuner 'Chinois' réticulé made between November 1836 and June 1831 by Joseph and François Richard, brothers who would both have been responsible for painting and gilding. The records in this instance are very precise as to who worked on which piece and it is known that Joseph worked on the two teabowls, two coffee-cups and four saucers. Completing the service were a tray, bowl, coffee-pot, teapot sugar-bowl and milk-jug.
