Dalou's lifesize plaster model of La Brodeuse was first exhibited at the Salon in 1870 (no. 4401). The State purchased it for 3,000 francs, and an advance was given to the artist for a marble version. During his exile in London, he exhibited a version in 1873 at the Royal Academy. Upon Dalou's return to France, Legrain reproduced a sand-cast version of the model. In 1880, Dalou destroyed both the plaster and the marble version, finding them inadequate. As such, all that remains of the original model is now the sketch and two reductions.
