The rouge marble orb surmounted by a figure of a sower, supported by four winged putti emblematic of the Four Seasons, on a circular support cast with two cartouche-shaped plaques inscribed PRIME D'HONNEUR/DÉCERNÉE À MR/S DE MANNEVILLE/À BARACÉ. MAINE-DE-LOIRE and ANGERS/1885, three of the edges engraved MINISTÈRE DE L'AGRICULTURE, CONCOURS RÉGIONAL AGRICOLE and CHRISTOFLE ORFÈVRES, on four scrolled feet terminating in hooved monopodiae, on a shaped marble base

Lot Essay

In France, annual agriculture shows were held for almost half a century, only ceasing with the onset of World War I. Every agricultural activity and sector was included in these events, as evidenced by the various names given to Christofle's productions, including: Grooming the Pig, The Scyther, Watering, Agricultural Science, and The Butcher.
