Of globular form, slip decorated in the cloisonné style and enriched with enamels and metallic foils with a swallow perched among flowering prunus eyeing a butterfly in flight, the reverse with two further butterflies among pendant foliage, on a moulded scrollwork ground, the shoulder with a shaped-lappet band painted with stylized flowers

Lot Essay

Theodore Deck was a noted exhibitor at the Paris Universelle Exhibition of 1878. Here he was exposed to a wide variety of Japanese works. Over the next two years this influence and inspiration was clearly manifest in his production.
