Lot Essay

Although this silk is classical in design, no other published examples have been found at the point of publication. Compare Ipek, The Crescent and the Rose, page 280, Figures 235 adn 236 for similar examples dated to the second half of the 16th century held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Cleveland Museum of Art respectively. The basic design structure is very similar to this example.
