Tommaso Francesco was the youngest son of Carlo Emanuele I (Il Grande), Duke of Savoy, and the founder of the Savoy-Carignano line of the house of Savoy, through which his descendant Carlo Alberto inherited the throne of Sardinia and, subsequently, became Kings of Italy. In addition, through his own younger son he was the grandfather of the celebrated general, François-Eugène, Prince of Savoy-Carignan (although the latter was also widely rumoured to be the illegitimate son of King Louis XIV of France).
