With an inverted breakfront and applied rim mouldings, the cover with a row of shields in different exotic woods, and mounted with gilt-bronze lions, two presentation inscription plaques dated 1889 and inscribed 'Union Fait la Force', the interior with velvet lift-out trays

Lot Essay

Possibly presented to commemorate the succession in 1889 of Carlos I of Portugal (1863-1908), eldest son of Luiz I of Portugal (1838-1889). Maria Pia di Savoia, daughter of Vittorio Emanuele II married Luiz I in 1862.
