Painted with a pair of angels supporting the shield of Savoia beneath a crown, signed 'F Bouvier', the guard sticks carved as a mythical bird, enamelled with the Savoia crest

A similar fan painted with the Kaiser Franz Joseph and his family in 1868-70, was exhibited in Fächer Kunst und Mode aus fünf Jahrhunderten, Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Munich, 1987, plate 81; another painted by Franz Thener but with photographs rather than portraits was exhibited in Der Fächer, Schloss Bruchsal, 1989, no. 122; there is another in the Museum of London, illustrated in Fans, K. Staniland, 1985, pl.19
