JOHN BURNBY
Summer Amusement: or, Miscellaneous Poems: inscribed to the frequenters of Margate, Ramsgate, Tunbridge Wells, Brighthelmstone, Southampton, Cheltenham, Weymouth, Scarborough, &c.
London: J. Dodsley, 1772 [but 1782]. 8vo. (7¼ x 4¼in; 186 x 109mm), with final blank (title restored at inner margin, occasional light marginal soiling, final printed leaf tipped onto end blank), blue calf for Goldman, spine in compartments with gilt lettering. Provenance: J. Gibson (two signatures, one in ink, one in pencil, the former dated 1785) -- Hubert G. Norman (signature dated 1938) -- J.W. Goldman (binding; lot 42 in his sale at Hodgson's, 24 November 1966, bought in at £14).

This collected edition includes the second printing of "The Kentish Cricketers" (pp. 40-52). The imprint date is erroneous: three of the poems are dated 1779, 1780 and 1781, and the work was reviewed in the Monthly Review, vol. 69, 1783. It is, as Goldman says, "very rare". The English Short Title Catalogue locates only two copies at BL and Yale; there is also a copy in the MCC library. Goldman p. 186; Padwick 6426.
