Third edition, one of two issues. Francis Grose (1731?-1791) first published his dictionary of underworld slang and thieves' cant in 1785. Sporting terms include "Bruiser: one skilled in the art of boxing", "Cocker: one fond of the diversions of cock fighting" and "Gambler: A sharper, a tricking gamester". "Tartar" has a range of meanings which include: "An adept at any feat, or game: he is quite a tartar at cricket, or billiards."
