WILLIAM DARTON, publisher
Sixteen Sports for Boys
London: William Darton, [c. 1824]. 16mo. (3¾ x 3¼in; 96 x 78mm), title, advertisement leaf and 16 hand-coloured engraved plates (title frayed and slightly torn at outer margin, title and some plates strengthened at inner margin), earlier 20th-century limp pigskin, contemporary red front wrapper bound in. Provenance: "Benjamin Knowles August 13th 1830 his book given by Miss Hames" (inscription on title verso) -- J.W. Goldman (pasted-over bookplate; lot 125 at Hodgson's, 24 November 1966, bought in at £16).
The bought in figure of £16 at the Goldman sale was a large sum at the time, and reflects his high opinion of this series of tiny engravings. Plate 12 is "Cricket". RARE. Not in Lawrence Darton, The Dartons: An Annotated Check-List (2004) or in Padwick; not in BL.
