Children's Plays - Short Stories for Good Children - The Lilly: a Pretty Book for Children - A Parent's Stories for Good Children
London: Religious Tract Society, [c. 1812]. 4 chapbooks in one volume, 24mo. (3.3.4 x 2¼in; 93 x 57mm), each 15 + [1]p., one or more woodcuts to a page throughout (final work with corner torn from title causing slight loss to border, other corners a little torn and creased), red calf for Goldman, upper cover titled in gilt. Provenance: J.W. Goldman (binding and pasted-over bookplate).
The text on p. 14 of the first chapbook reads: "Cricket is a much better game than foot ball, because there are regular rules for playing, which are always strictly kept by honourable boys." However, the woodcut above shows three boys having an obvious quarrel on the pitch; and the same admonitory cut is repeated in the other three books. Not in Goldman or Padwick; not in BL.
