JOHN LILLYWHITE
Cricketers' Companion
London: John Lillywhite, 1865-85. 21vols., 8vo., the first two issues with differing woodcut vignette on title, 1878 with errata slip (1865 lacks all after p. 158, also with small repair to title, 1866 with title and wrappers re-attached causing slight loss, heavy spotting to first and last gatherings of 1884, intermittent light spotting in other vols.), dark blue morocco for Eagar, flat spines uniformly lettered in gilt, most original green wrappers bound in (spines sunfaded, spines of 1879 and 1885 chipped at head, 1870 lacks wrappers, 1865 with wrappers heavily soiled, occasional light soiling elsewhere, front wrapper of 1874 crudely repaired on verso).
The first issue is imperfect, one volume (1870) lacks the wrappers, and two others (1865 and 1874) have rather obtrusive repairs. In other respects however, this is an excellent set of "green" Lillywhites, given an impressive uniformity by the full morocco binding, and with most wrappers extremely well preserved. All issues but the first have Prince-of-Wales feathers on the front wrapper, denoting the book's patron. Allen 56; Britton p. 27; Goldman p. 126; Taylor p. 66; Padwick 1088. (21)
