London: Frederick Warne, [1866?]. 16mo., wood-engraved frontispiece and 3 plates, 3 full-page diagrams, original green cloth lettered and decorated in black, gilt figure of a batsman stamped on front cover, gilt edges. Provenance: J.W. Goldman. MINT COPY. Presumably first issue since it is without the coloured frontispiece found in most copies. The frontispiece is uncoloured and shows batting and wicket-keeping gloves, one plate shows a bat, stumps and pad, while the two others contain eight figures of stroke play.
With another incomplete copy of the same work, [1866?], containing a coloured frontispiece and 4 plates (lacks 2 leaves at end), original cloth (worn), ex Goldman. The plate opposite p. 27 in this second copy forms the frontispiece to the first copy, described above. Both copies are preserved in a slipcase (not made to fit) with Goldman's bookplate (pasted-over). Another edition was published in 1868. Allen 103; Goldman p. 50: Taylor p. 110; Padwick 485. (2)
