[A Cradle of Cricket]

Original manuscript in Cardus's hand, untitled, [1952]. 4to., 6p., inscribed at head "A present to Desmond Eagar with best wishes from Neville Cardus, February 1952", signed on the final leaf, and with a letter from Cardus to Eagar, dated National Liberal Club, Whitehall Place, London SW1, bound in at front, contemporary blue buckram.

Cardus's letter reads: "I enclose corrected proof of the article. My suggested titles are A Cradle of Cricket [or] Hampshire History but don't hesitate to change them if you can think of something happier. I also return the original MS., and I'm proud to think you consider it worthy of your collection". With five other letters from Cardus to Eagar, dated 16 October 1951 to 19 February 1952, all concerning publication of this article which eventually appeared in the Hampshire Handbook for 1952 (pp. 19-21) under the title "The Cradle of Cricket".
