Albert Skira (1904-1972), the first owner of this drawing, was the founder of Editions Skira in Lausanne which he established with the intent of commissioning the greatest living artists to illustrate masterpieces of literature. In 1933 Dalí signed a contract with Skira to do forty sketches for Lautrémont's Les Chants de Maldoror.
