Lot Essay
In a letter to the present owner dated January 20, 1982, Sally Avery writes:
"What a stroke of luck to start your art collection with a Milton Avery painting.
I think the Avery you bought at the U.J.A. auction at Parke Bernet last year is an enchanting painting. I remember seeing it there for the first time since we sold it in 1940. I would say it was painted a year earlier. I always loved the tenderness in its colors--shapes--and relationships; a father's tribute to his little daughter.
Sincerely
Sally M. Avery"
