Literature
One of the portraits of Crookes & Spiller was reproduced in G.E. Brown (ed.), The British Journal of Photography, Diamond Jubilee Number, 19 June 1914, p.xvi (Supplement); for another portrait of Claudet, probably from the same sitting, D.B. Thomas, The First Negatives, London, 1964, p.29, pl.29, there identified as a self-portrait taken in August 1844.

Sitters: David Brewster (1781-1868); Antoine Claudet (1797-1867); William Crookes (1832-1921); Warren de la Rue (1815-1889); Thomas Ross (1818-1870), son of Andrew Ross; John Spiller (1833-1921); and Nevil Story-Maskelyne (1823-1911). Correspondents and date(s) of letter: Claudet, 1848; Michael Faraday, 1846, 1848; Nicolaas Henneman, 1852; Thomas Augustine Malone, 1856; Story-Maskelyne, 1854; Edward Tanner, 1845; and Charles Wheatstone, 1856.

Of the eight letters, five are written to Robert Murray, two are written by him and one (by Henneman) is written to Mrs. Robert Murray.
