From there he began to document the local community for over 50 years. Thanks to his genius both for classic portraiture and darkroom experimentation -- retouching negatives and creating elaborate photomontages -- Van Der Zee was much in demand. He celebrated the life of the emergent black middle class with images that reflected his clients' independence and achievements while capturing the spirit and energy of the Harlem Renaissance.' - J.D.
