Lot Essay

'Larry Colwell was a friend and contemporary of Wynn Bullock, Ruth Bernhard, Brett and Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham. His figure studies were promoted in Aperture Magazine by Minor White and exhibited frequently on the West coast of America. Although little known today, Colwell's nudes are exquisitely printed examples of both the f:64 school of photography and a particularly 1950s American aesthetic.' - J.D.
