Lot Essay

'George Hurrell played a major role in shaping the careers of many of the great stars of Hollywood's "golden era" with his use of dramatic poses, high-contrast lighting and masterful printing. In 1941, he was hired by Howard Hughes (and paid what was then a small fortune) to come up with a photographic campaign for The Outlaw which would market the busty charms of his discovery, Jane Russell. (Hughes even designed a special bra to emphasize Russell's figure). Hurrell responded with a suggestive shoot in a hayloft which helped keep the film banned from most U.S. theaters until 1950.' - J.D.
