A LARGE KASHAN TURQUOISE GLAZED MOULDED TOMBSTONE, CENTRAL IRAN, DATED 23 SAFAR AH 679/24 JUNE 1280 AD
The square tile with a central rectangular panel containing ten lines of cursive naskh moulded under the glaze, a raised rib at each side, further script written along each side forming the border, repaired breaks, some restoration to upper section, mounted. 18¼ x 18½in. (46.5 x 47cm.)

Lot Essay

The central inscription begins from the Qur'an sura xxxvi yasin, parts of v.10 followed by "this is the tomb of the dehkhoda (head man of the village) of Harisi (?) Jamal al-Din Muhammad ibn Mahmud ibn Muhammad as-A...kan [who died] on Sunday 23rd Safar, the year six hundred and seventy-nine".

The margins are also from the Qur'an, sura xxxvi, yasin, vv.1-mid.v.3 and mid.v.8-mid.v.9.
