This binding commemorates a great romantic love story. Charles de Sainte-Maure courted Julie-Lucie d'Angennes for twelve years before she agreed to marry him in 1645, and he wrote for her the famous Guirlande de Julie, the manuscript magnificently written and illuminated by Nicholas Jarry. She died in 1671, but the Duke continued to use their joint arms and monogram on his bindings. This work by Graziani is a collection of biographical essays on Cesare Borgia, Henry VIII, John Fisher and Thomas More, etc., and remained unpublished until it was edited by Fléchier. FIRST EDITION. Tchemerzine V, 255.
