A FINE UNSOPHISTICATED COPY OF THIS RARE WORK on the spectacular costume ball held at the court of King Louis Augustus of Bavaria on 3 February 1835. The ball had two distinct themes: the personification of the various countries of the world, and the characters from Sir Walter Scott's Quentin Durward. Lipperheide gives Ernst Fries as one of the artists: this is unlikely as he had died in 1833. His younger brother Bernhardt is a possibility, but he would have been very young (if his date of birth was May 1820 as stated in Benezit). Colas I, 1133; Lipperheide Sbc 26. (4)
